Veterans Honored on Campus Today

Today is Veteran’s Day.

We are recognizing veterans with the largest event since UCA began an annual celebration 14 years ago.

The celebration begins at 9 a.m. in Simon Park in downtown Conway. Veterans, their families and city officials will gather in the park to raise the American flag. The ROTC team from UCA will provide the color guard.

The campus events begin at 10 a.m. in Estes Stadium. There will be live music and live remote broadcasts from KCNY-FM, 107.1, and KKPT-FM, 94.1. There also will be military aircraft and vehicles on display, door prizes, games, free food and T-shirts. The event ends at 3 p.m.

The choir from St. Joseph Elementary School will sing the national anthem and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. More than 100 balloons will be released in honor of soldiers who died in combat.

The administration decided to increase the size of the event because of the number of veterans who are students on campus, according to Brooks Walthall, the veteran's service coordinator on campus.

"Almost 400 students are enrolled who receive the GI Bill to attend college," Walthall said. "That's a good increase for UCA and it tells us we're doing something right."
