SGA Introduces Bike Program Today
March 18, 2010 by: Allyson McnabbUCA’s sophomore senators, led by class president Jessica Gambill, will unveil the new university bike share program during X-period today as part of Green Week.
The bike program is sponsored by the Student Government Association. The bike share program is designed to promote UCA’s “green” reputation and help raise awareness for healthy living.
SGA senators decided to start the program after discovering that there was a surplus of bikes left on campus from previous semesters. The senators worked with Conway Advocacy for Bikes (CAB), the Physical Plant, and the HPER Center to develop the program.
CAB helped by rebuilding the bikes. CAB is using a combination of used parts from donated bikes and new parts to make the bikes that will be used in the program. They are all painted purple, of course.
Larry Lawrence, director of the physical plant, drew up plans for new bike racks that will be placed around the campus. The HPER will run the check-in and check-out process.
Gambill said students must provide their student ID number and other personal information to check out a bike. Each bike is accompanied by a lock and chain to secure it while not in use, she said. If a student fails to return a bike, the university will place a hold on the student’s MyUCA account.
“Rather than drive your car to the store or across campus to Stanley Russ, why don’t you check out one of these nice new purple bikes and get exercise while saving the environment?” Gambill said.
