UCA Dominates Track Meet

UCA hosted its first track and field meet in 20 years Saturday and won 27 of the 37 events, despite bad weather and a public address system malfunction at the Bill Stephens Track Complex.

The Sugar Bears recorded eight Southland Conference outdoor championship qualifying marks and set four school records. The Bears had 14 qualifying marks and set two school records.

Among them was freshman Tony Stewart who broke the school 3,000-meter steeplechase record by 29 seconds with a conference qualifying time of 9:42.76. Stewart also finished second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:40.68. Senior Danny McBride came in third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10: 22.85.

Stewart said it was his first time to run the 3,000-meter steeplechase and that it was hard and fun. “Hitting that cold water and running in this heavy wind was difficult, but I feel confident about the season after that race,” he said.

Senior De'Andrea Neal placed second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:02.94. Freshman Bradley Kintner finished third in the event with a time of 2:04.44.

The Sugar Bears took all three spots in the 100 meter dash. Sophomore Knequila Pemberton finished first in both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 12.90 and 27.32, respectively. In the discus throw, sophomore Autumn Stewart placed first with a throw of 36.51 meters and second in the hammer throw at 33.27 meters. Freshman Tasha Bryles and freshman Mackenzie Johnson placed second and third in the discus throw with throws of 33.70 meters and 30.19 meters, respectively.

The meet started 45 minutes late because of the problems with the sound system.
