This is Jesus Week at UCA

Easter is the holiest time of the year for Christians and one student group has planned a week of events to celebrate it.

The Friends of Christ Uniting Students (FOCUS) is sponsoring its annual Jesus Week in this week preceding Easter.

Yesterday, FOCUS took prayer request. Today, during X-period, they held "prayer in the courtyard" outside the cafeteria.

The remaining events for the week include:

  • Wednesday - Passing out scriptures and "witnessing" to students between noon and 1:30 p.m. in the courtyard in front of the Student Center.
  • Thursday - Leading a "Jesus March" around campus. It starts in the courtyard during X-period and ends at the fountain with a prayer.
  • Friday - Sponsoring "Game Night," a new event this year. Students are invited to play games and share the Bible from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Student Center, Room 215.

  1. Does anyone think it would be appropriate to have an 'Atheist Week' promoting a more comprehensive understanding of atheism? If not, why?

  2. I agree with Eric.

  3. I don't think there was a question of whether or not it's appropriate. Their week is about a religious belief. Atheism is a lack of belief in any religion, so what is there to understand?

There wasn't a question regarding whether or not the week was appropriate or not, but I thought it would be okay to ask the question. It seemed somewhat relevant.

I'm not sure I follow your reasoning. Just because there are no beliefs it does not follow that there is nothing to understand.

Reasons can be given that support a lack of belief. Reasons can, and need, be explained and clarified. Just as the reasons for a religious event can, and need be, explained and clarified. Though an 'Atheism Week' may never be tied to a specific event as Jesus Week is, we needn't consider a week of understanding as being necessarily attached to a specific event or function for it to exist. I assume promoting clarification and understanding to be worthwhile independent of that.
