International Day of Peace

You can celebrate the annual International Day of Peace today in front of the Student Center by making an origami crane while listening to live music from local performers Clint Mason, Jason Hannah and Robert Kay and sociology professor Doug George.

The event is sponsored by the Sociology Club, PRISM and the UCA chapter of Heifer International. It begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m. It's free.

The United Nations established the International Day of Peace in 1981 to promote communication and cooperation among nations. According to the website that promotes the event, there are many ways to commemorate the day. "It can be as simple as lighting a candle at noon , or just sitting in silent meditation.  International Day of Peace is also a Day of Ceasefire – personal or political."

Organizers of the event on our campus are honoring the memory of Sadako Sasaki. Sasaki was a Japanese girl who died from leukemia at the age of 12 after she was exposed to radiation from the atomic bombs dropped on Japan during World War II.

The goal is to make 1,000 cranes. Japanese legend says that folding 1,000 paper cranes is a symbol of peace and will bring good health. Sasaki attempted to fold the 1,000 cranes from her hospital bed during her illness.

Everyone who makes a paper crane will get the chance to win a peace crane built by sociology professor Clifford Beacham. You'll also get a peace cookie.

"The People Speak," a film inspired by Howard Zinn, also will be shown.
