Beaver Claims Campus Creek

April 30, 2010 by: David Long

Remember this story about the packs of feral cats on campus? Well, we have found even more exotic wildlife in our midst.

There’s a beaver living in the creek that runs through campus. We have proof. That’s a photo of him accompanying this story. Need more?  Here’s a video of him swimming around in the creek.

The creek, commonly known as Stone Dam Creek, has been transformed several times since the campus was built 103 years ago. Originally a free-flowing stream that was used as a water source for livestock on campus, the university has continued to build over the top of it. Now, it is mostly covered and emerges in a concrete culvert on the south end of campus.

The creek has always provided draining for much of the campus and most of the original downtown section of Conway. Today, it also provides drainage for a waste water treatment plant and eventually empties into Lake Conway.

Here is a Channel Six story about the creek.
