The Student Government Association (SGA) voted unanimously Monday to tell the Bears football team that they and all students on campus support the team's journey in the NCAA Division 1 football playoffs.

SGA will send a formal letter to the football players expressing their appreciation for the team and its 9-3 season and first-round playoff win against Tennessee Tech last weekend. SGA said it wants the team to know that, despite low student attendance at games, they support the team and its accomplishments.

Paige Turner, junior class president, endorsed the idea. She described the Bear's next opponent, the University of Montana Grizzlies, as a "powerhouse" that has been on top of the division for years and that this game means a lot for our university. She said the letter of gratitude to the team would help increase their morale for the game.

T.J. Beringer, senior class president, also spoke in favor of telling the team that "we support and back you."

In other business, SGA changed the wording of the description of the Diversity Committee to broaden the number of students it represents but reduce its responsibilities. The phrase "underrepresented students" was added to the list that previously included international, non-traditional and transfer students. The requirement that the committee "be charged with the task of bridging the social and cultural gap between international students and U.S. students" was removed.

The Bears football team look for their seventh straight victory and first berth in the NCAA playoffs as they host Texas State on Senior Day at 4 p.m. today in Estes Stadium.

The Bears (7-3, 6-1) , need a victory to move one step closer to their first postseason playoff appearance since moving up to NCAA Division I FCS in 2006. The Bears have an open date on Nov. 19 to close the season.

“We’ve done all we can do in conference play, that’s over for us," said UCA head coach Clint Conque. “Now we have a chance, if we can win one more game this weekend, to possibly make the postseason playoffs for the first time at the Division I level. That’s what’s out there for us and what is keeping us going after 10 straight weeks of football."

UCA is ranked No. 19 in The Sports Network/Fathead.com poll and 25th in the FCS Coaches’ Poll this week.

The Bears have knocked off six straight league rivals to tie their best SLC finish ever. The Bears finished 6-1 in 2008 but were ineligible for the conference title or postseason play because of its transition.

The Bears can finish no lower than second place as first-place Sam Houston State (6-0) has one game remaining. The Bearkats have wrapped up the automatic qualifier to the playoffs by virtue of the head-to-head win. With the win Saturday, the Bears would seemingly be in good shape to receive an at-large bid to the 20-team playoff field.

“We’re playing for a chance to go to the NCAA championships," said Conque. “This is why you coach, this is why you play. You want to be playing games into November that are very important and this is one of those. This will give us an opportunity to get our seventh Division I win, our eighth overall, and hopefully something beyond that."

The Bears once again got big plays from their defense, including a 98-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Frank Newsome, to win their third consecutive conference game Saturday with a 21-18 victory over McNeese State Cowboys in Estes Stadium.

McNeese State got on the scoreboard first. After holding the Bears to a three-and-out on the opening possession, McNeese scored on a 55-yard drive that took just 1:30 off the clock.

The Bears responded on the first play of their next possession. Quarterback Nathan Dick found receiver Dominique Croom streaking down the right sideline of the field for an 81-yard touchdown to bring the score even with 10:46 remaining in the first quarter.

The Cowboys, trailing 12-7 in the second half, threatened with a drive deep into Bear territory but the defense stopped them with a big play. Cowboy's running back Marcus Wilt took a handoff from quarterback Cody Stroud and was hit hard by Bears safety Jestin Love, who caused the ball to squirt into the waiting hands of Newsome who scooped up the ball at the two-yard line with a clear field ahead of him.

"The first 10 yards were pretty tough for me," Newsome said. "But that's why you work out over the summer to be able to hold up for plays like that. The back of the endzone was my target and Jestin was right there waiting for me."

The touchdown return broke the school record of 94-yards set by Danny Reed in 1967.

The Bears' offense didn't score any points in the second half but the defense refused to break against the Cowboy's relentless attack. Larry Duvall forced a fumble to end one drive at UCA's 22-yard line and Love's interception with 17 seconds left in the game sealed the victory for the Bears.

"We have playmakers on defense and they made plays when we had to have them," said Bears head coach Clint Conque."When you get a 5-1 advantage in turnover margin, you have a pretty good chance of winning the game. We have been a great red zone defense all year. And we held a team that really likes to run the football to 2.17 yard per play."

Dick finished the game 15 for 25 passing for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Croom caught six passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Newsome finished with 11 tackles (six solo), an interception and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

The Bears will try to make it four in a row when they travel to Beaumont, Texas, to play the Lamar Cardinals. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. The game will be televised on the Southland Conference Television Network.

The Bears will try to make it three wins in a row when they return home to First Security Field at Estes Stadium to host the McNeese State Cowboys in the fourth annual "Red Beans and Rice Bowl."

Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. The game will be televised by Southland Television. In Conway, it will be broadcast on Channel 9.

McNeese State (3-2, 2-0) leads the Southland Conference standings and has the conference's best pass defense. The Bears (3-3, 2-1) have the third-best passing offense in the league with quarterback Nathan Dick, who is the league's second-best passer. Dick has passed for 1,330 yards in five games this season.

The Cowboys lost at home last week to Texas State University, 21-14. The Bears won 37-31 last week against Nicholls State University. The Bears have beat the Cowboys in their last two trips to Conway.

Last week, Dick completed 25 of 33 passes for 306 yards and three touchdowns and added 35 yards rushing and another touchdown. Dominique Croom caught five passes for 82 yards while Jesse Grandy caught five passes for 58 yards. Bears running back Jackie Hinton rushed for 70 yards on 14 carries to lead the Bears rushing attack. The game featured 68 points and 857 yards of offense.

"This is a big game for a lot of reasons," Bears head coach Clint Conque told ucasports.com. "Both teams are trying to position themselves for a run at a conference championship. And, the game is on regional television, which always makes everything about it a little more exciting for the players, the coaches and the fans. The weather is going to be nice, there will be tailgaiting all over the place. It should be a great afternoon of college football."

The first statewide soccer tournament for Latinos is being played on our campus this weekend.

It's called the UCA Amigo Cup Soccer Challenge and it begins at 10 a.m. today. The games continue at 8 a.m. tomorrow. The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday. The games are being held at the Bill Stephens Track and Soccer Complex. Admission is free.

There are 14 teams from around the state and Memphis competing in the tournament for the title of Latino State Soccer Champion. That lineup includes eight men's teams and six women's teams. They are competing for cash prizes, medals and the championship trophy.

The event includes Mexican food vendors, campus bus tours, face painting and rock wall climbing.

UCA hosted the first Amigo Cup last year but participation was limited to six teams in the central Arkansas area. Because of the success of that tournament, organizers expanded it to include the rest of the state this year.

Cesar Aguilar, director of the Northwest Arkansas Soccer League, said the tournament benefits the university and the state's growing Latino community.

"This tournament is great for our community because UCA is showing that it cares about the future of Latinos by providing an opportunity for a college education," Aguilar said.

Gary Roberts, dean of students, said the tournament will introduce the university to Latinos and help recruit them to our campus. Latinos are the fast-growing group in the state with an increase of more than 100 percent over the past decade.

Organizers expect a large crowd and seating is limited. They recommend that you arrive early and bring your own chair.

Here is a video of the action at last year's tournament.

The senate representing the faculty and the senate representing the staff passed resolutions this week asking Board of Trustees Chairman Scott Roussel to recuse himself from the Aramark investigation.

Both resolutions condemned Roussel for not telling the other board members about a contract extension tied to Aramark's offer to donate $700,000 for the renovation of the president's house. Former President Allen Meadors also knew about the condition and didn't disclose it to the board. Meadors resigned Sept. 2, days after the controversy began.

The faculty senate tabled a resolution asking for Roussel's resignation from the board and a resolution that would have been a vote of no confidence in the board. The staff senate also tabled a resolution asking for Roussel's resignation. Both groups said they would wait until the investigation was complete before reconsidering the resolutions, according to a story in the Thursday's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

News6 had this report on the faculty senate's meeting earlier this week.

Are you tired of paying too much to see Hollywood movies? Well, tonight you can watch some original productions for free on campus.

The faculty of the UCA digital filmmaking program will show their most recent productions at a screening at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Performance Hall. The films range in length from four minutes to 30 minutes each.

It's the first time the film faculty has collectively held an independent screening, according to Mike Gunter, associate professor of digital filmmaking. All the films were made in the past year and the crews consisted mostly of film students, Gunter said.

"It's partly to showcase the work of the film faculty," Gunter said.

The films are:

"Going to Hell" - Directed by Bruce Hutchinson. This is the story of three people during a zombie epidemic, one of whom may be infected.

"The Proposal" - Directed by Joe Dull. This film is about a man asking permission from his girlfriend's infant daughter to marry her mother. It doesn't go well.

"The Darkroom" - Directed by Eric Yang. The film depicts a grizzled photographer who must fight for his job.

"The Midterm Incident" - Directed by Joe Dull. This spoof of an action movie is about a college student who must trade out his midterm.

"Starring: Rachel Miller" - Directed by Joe Dull. This is the story of a walking paraplegic who sings and dances.

"Chutes and Gates" - Directed by Mike Gunter. A trip to a farm teaches a boy a lot about a cow.

The following information was taken from incident reports at UCAPD. Incident reports are filed daily by officers to document and describe each call they answer during their shifts. These reports are made available by university police after they are approved by a supervisor. That process takes a few days, which delays our report by a few days. This is a complete report of incidents filed for Sept. 12.

Student Justin Earl Grimsley 19, of Springdale, reported at 3:03 p.m. that someone broke into his 2003 Silverado truck and stole all his ROTC gear. Items taken included a duffel bag, pistol belt, camouflage pouch, canteen, two ammunition pouches, canteen covers, suspenders, a field pack, a poncho, wet weather parka, wet weather trousers and a Kevlar helmet. The items were valued at $1,000.00.

Student Erica Allyse Evans 18, of Heber Springs, contacted police at 6:43 p.m. to report that her car had been damaged in a hit-and-run incident. Evans said she she discovered the damage about 8 a.m. when she went to her car in the parking lot east of the HPER Center. She told police she didn't know when the damaged occurred. Police estimated the damage to the driver's side door and front fender at $700.
