SGA senators rejected an offer from the department to sign a five-year advertising and sponsorship contract. The senators debated the contract from more than two hours before voting against it, 14-20. The vote was taken Oct. 18.

Meghan Thompson, executive president of SGA, said the senate declined the deal because there was little student support for using the money to advertise SGA. The money would have come from SGA's reserve account.

"They did offer us a lot but, as a whole, (SGA) felt like it was something students didn’t want," Thompson said. "We didn’t want to spend $30,000 of students' money when we heard negative feedback about it and tie SGA into a 5-year commitment to something."

The contract required SGA to make a one-time payment of $30,000 to the athletic department. In exchange, the SGA logo would be displayed on the screen in the Farris Center during games and SGA would be the T-shirt sponsor for two games. The deal also included being listed as an official sponsor of the volleyball team.

The Student Government Association plans to take a closer look at the fiscal aspects of the university's Division of Academic Outreach and Extended Programs, SGA President Cody Wilson said yesterday.

The office, which offers community and online classes, “deserves our attention … it makes things like online classes more expensive than they need to,” Wilson said.

The SGA questions the higher cost of online classes and why the AOEP offers them separately from UCA’s standard course offerings.

Although the AOEP’s budget is $5 million, it only takes in $2 million, Wilson said. Though the office claims it is responsible for marketing the university, it only spent $45 on advertising last year, he said.

“They’re burning way more than they are taking in … it looks like they are charging more than what they would have to charge … it looks devious,” Wilson said after the SGA meeting last night. “We definitely do not want to go on a witch-hunt. We just want to make online classes affordable to students.”
