Sugar Bears Win, Again and Again
February 26, 2010 by: Brandon CollinsThe Sugar Bears basketball team is at the top of the conference after beating the Nicholls State Lady Colonels, 83-68, at the Farris Center Wednesday night.
It was the Sugar Bears’ 10th win in the Southland Conference where they are now 10-3 and tied with the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks for the most conference wins.
Freshman center Megan Herbert led the Sugar Bears with 23 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the field. Herbert also grabbed 13 rebounds.
Freshman forward Desiree Rogers was the second-leading scorer with 16 points on 5 of 14 shooting from the field. Rogers also shot 6 of 8 from the free throw line and grabbed five rebounds.
Guard Nakeia Guiden scored 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting and forward Westin Taylor added nine points on 3 of 6 shooting with four rebounds.
Head Coach Matt Daniel said he was “glad to get the 20th win.”
The Sugar Bears shot 50 percent from the field on 30-60 shooting, and held the Lady Colonels to 38.2 percent on 26-68 shooting. The Sugar Bears shot 26.3 percent from the 3-point line on 5-19 shooting and held the Lady Colonels to 19.2 percent on 5-26 from beyond the arc. The Sugar Bears shot 75 percent from the free throw line on 18-24 shooting, compared to the Lady Colonels who shot 61.1 percent on 11-18 from the charity stripe. The Lady Colonels out-rebounded the Sugar Bears, 40-38.
The Sugar Bears now have a record of 20-6 overall, and haven’t lost a game since their Feb. 10 when they lost to the University of Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners.
