Softball Bears Sweep Series

The softball Bears doubled-up Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas, on Saturday, winning both games of the Southland Conference doubleheader.

The Bears’ top pitchers, Kelsie Armstrong and Cami Newsome,were too much for the Ladyjacks. UCA (33-18, 9-7 SLC) won the first game 1-0 and completed the sweep with a 6-0 victory in the second game.

UCA scored the lone run of the first game when  Melanie Bryant singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Stephanie Lasley during the top frame of the third inning.

The Ladyjacks (13-30, 4-12 SLC) could not muster a run as  Angela White (5-14) took the loss for Stephen F. Austin. Armstrong (20-11) collected her 30th complete game and 20th win of the season. Armstrong compiled 12 strikeouts and allowed one hit. White allowed seven hits and one run in seven innings while walking three. She didn’t record a strikeout.

Newsome (10-4) picked up the win for the Bears. She struck out three  and surrendered four hits in four innings. Armstrong threw the final three innings of the game and earned her third save of the season.

The Bears host Southland Conference rival UT-Arlington for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday. They host Big 12 Conference foe Oklahoma at Farris Field at 1 p.m. Saturday.
