SGA Questions AOEP Finances
March 9, 2010 by: Will HehemannThe Student Government Association plans to take a closer look at the fiscal aspects of the university’s Division of Academic Outreach and Extended Programs, SGA President Cody Wilson said yesterday.
The office, which offers community and online classes, “deserves our attention … it makes things like online classes more expensive than they need to,” Wilson said.
The SGA questions the higher cost of online classes and why the AOEP offers them separately from UCA’s standard course offerings.
Although the AOEP’s budget is $5 million, it only takes in $2 million, Wilson said. Though the office claims it is responsible for marketing the university, it only spent $45 on advertising last year, he said.
“They’re burning way more than they are taking in … it looks like they are charging more than what they would have to charge … it looks devious,” Wilson said after the SGA meeting last night. “We definitely do not want to go on a witch-hunt. We just want to make online classes affordable to students.”
