Last Home Basketball Game Tonight
The Bears basketball team will play its last home game of the season at 7 p.m. today.
The team is set to meet the Stephen F. Austin University Lumberjacks for Senior Night. The Bears will be honoring two senior players, forward Quad Sanders and forward Mitch Rueter. Sanders has played for the Bears both in basketball and in football. Chappell said tonight is going to be an even bigger night for Rueter.
“He played here all five years during our probation period and that’s really tough playing through all that,” he said. “During that time he tore his ACL and had to go through rehab and battled and dealt with all of that. He also had to deal with the loss of his mother to cancer. We are really proud of him and tonight will be a night for both him and Quad.”
When the Bears played the Lumberjacks earlier this season they lost, 49-64. The Bears have had a rough season so far with a 2-11 record in conference, but Coach Rand Chappell is hoping senior night will motivate the team to pull of one last home win.
“It’s going to be senior night so obviously it’s a night that is special to honor those guys and I know the whole team wants to send our two seniors out with a win,” Chappell said.
The Bears are going to have to step up offensively tonight, he said.
“We have to be aggressive with the ball, screen to get each other open, be aggressive when attacking the basket and we have to be willing to make that one extra pass to get quality shots,” he said.
On the defensive side of the ball, Chappell said the teams key defensive players are going to have to play at their best.
“We need for Carlos Dos Santos and our other bigs to have a great effort against their strong offensive players and I think one of the reasons why they are such a good team is because they are very balanced and they have a lot of weapons to choose from,” he said.
The Bears will have one more game after tonight against the McNeese Cowboys in Lake Charles, La.
