Free Cats
There are packs of wild cats living on campus.
These cats are feral and they've been known to scratch or bite people who try to touch them. Some have even climbed through open windows into first-floor dormitory rooms.
The people who know the most about them say they most likely are the descendants of cats abandoned by students.
The cats have enough presence on campus that a UCA chapter of the Humane Society was formed to care for them. The chapter provides food for the cats and has spayed or neutered many of them.
The Humane Society has identified four separate colonies on campus. One is based near Carmichael Hall, another near Torreyson Library and one each by State Hall and Hughes Hall.
Lisa Mongno, faculty adviser to the UCA chapter, said that the best thing we can do for these cats is to leave them alone. Because the cats are wild, they don't trust humans, and they don't need our help to survive.
As safety precautions, Mongno recommends honking your horn to check for cats hiding under the hood of your car before starting the engine and keeping first-floor windows closed.
