More Greeks, Less Parking
Parking will become a bit more tedious next semester because of the administration's plans to remove two of our largest parking lots.
The parking lot between the tennis courts and the Physical Plant will be transformed into an authentic outdoor Greek amphitheater during the summer break. The amphitheater will be used only as a gathering place for the Greek organizations on campus, according to Larry Lawrence, director of the Physical Plant. Only students in a registered Greek organization will be allowed on the property, he said.
"A recent study by our sociology department showed that students in Greek organizations need special attention," Lawrence said. "They are fragile, like the first dandelions that brave the late winter frost to greet the spring. So, this is the least we could do for them."
A related plan calls for converting the parking lot at the corner of Donaghey and Robins streets into an 80,000-square-foot entertainment complex for the exclusive use of the Greek organizations. The complex will have a ballroom, individual studios, private rooms and co-ed showers.
The administration agreed to build the complex after the fraternities and sororities on campus explained that all the students on campus supported the idea, Lawrence said.
"The other students obviously understand that the Greeks are special," he said. "What's a few parking spaces? Wouldn't you ride a bike to school if it helped the Greek community? I know I would."
Happy April Fool's Day.
