Last Call for Art This Semester
There is a reception for graduating art students at 2 p.m. today in Baum Gallery.
The event includes the final works of 20 Bachelor of Arts students and five Bachelor of Fine Arts students. Exhibiting their work is part of the graduation requirement. They spent most of the past year creating the work and it was selected by a jury of faculty members.
“This is more than just a display of the work the students like … it’s a cooperative decision with [the jury]," said Barbara Satterfield, director of Baum Gallery. "They enter a professional discussion … look at each piece and determine their merits and shortcomings.”
Satterfield said an artist’s ability to determine his strongest work is critically important. The juried discussion teaches students how to selectively identify their best work.
BA student Sidney Jones is exhibiting pieces with a strong anti-war message. Her work consists of plaster-sculpted grenades on display in different ways. “Fallen Arkansans” commemorates dead soldiers from Arkansas and features hanging slots in which grenades are housed, one for every fallen soldier.
One row of slots is empty.
“The empty space is important because it shows there’s more to come,” Jones said. She adds another grenade for every fallen soldier. “When I started the project, the toll was 67 … now it’s up to 70,” she said.
The exhibit is free and open to the public.
