Green Week Combines Fun, Learning

It is Green Week at UCA.

The organizers - Student Government Association, Biology Club, Sociology Club and UCA Environmental Alliance - have scheduled events throughout the week to raise awareness on campus and in Conway about environmental issues.

The events include starting fires using primitive methods, potting cucumber seeds to grow your own garden and making durable tote bags by ironing plastic grocery bags together.

Green Week is part of a national movement by the Green Education Foundation to educate students in ways to be better stewards of the environment. GEF encourages schools nationwide to sponsor a Green Week between Feb. 1 and April 13.

The events begin today with Recycling Day and RSO Day. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the courtyard outside the Student Center, events include an environmental fair by RSO, how-to clinics on recycling, a contest to recycle the most aluminum cans and a dancing recycling bin.

Other events, all held in the courtyard, are:

Green Art Day - Tuesday - 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

  • UCA students exhibit statues made from recycled materials. If you have something you'd like to share, bring it!
  • An appearance from Gene Hatfield.
  • The bands Cerro Gordo, Michael Sutterfield, and Paul Sammons will be playing in the courtyard during X-period.
  • Recycled origami-making lessons.

Natural Resources Day - Wednesday - 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
