Time Ticking on Baum Exhibit

There's only a week left to see the exhibit that has transformed UCA’s Baum Gallery into something resembling a ratty old New York City subway station.

Obviously, this isn't a traditional art exhibit. Any aristocratic art lover that walked into the gallery might faint from the sight of the "Tagged, Stamped & Stenciled: Guerilla Art 'Goes Gallery'" exhibit. It is interactive and features guerilla art, more commonly called graffiti, in a setting that includes street murals, construction debris and pipes protruding from the walls. It was created by famed artist Mark Bode, along with a UCA master's class in painting.

If that's enough to get you to Baum, how about the opportunity to add your own graffiti? Legally. Markers are available for anybody who wants to leave his or her own "tag" on the exhibit. Not only do you get to look at some cool art, you get to create it.

Baum as a subway station

For those not quite as adventurous, but still looking for a unique viewing experience, check out the room devoted to another art exhibit called “Polarized Dispersions.” This exhibit, which was created by UCA art professor Michael Wyshock, is a multi-media installation. Video footage, combined wth sound, bounces off a large hanging fabric sculpture, creating a Twilight Zone feel that will leave viewers wondering if they’ve entered another dimension.

It’s not often that students get the chance to have an interactive experience with art at the Baum Gallery or any art gallery, for that matter. But, you have to move fast. The exhibit is only up until Feb. 25. The Baum Gallery’s hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
