Free Fitness Clinic for Women

The Women Run Arkansas running club is offering a free clinic on campus for women of all ages and skill levels.

The club meets at 6 p.m. every Monday and Thursday at the Farris Field track. The club met at Conway High School and Laurel Park the past two weeks before moving to campus this week. Women are encouraged to attend the bi-weekly sessions for 10 weeks.

On May 8th, 35 different Women Run Arkansas clubs from across the state will congregate in Conway for the Women Can Run 5K graduation at the Agora Conference Center on Siebenmorgen Road. This will be Conway’s 13th year to participate.

Participants are divided between walkers and runners and are coached by team leaders specific to participants’ ability level. The club offers walking in beginning, intermediate, and power-walking sections, and running in beginning A, beginning B, intermediate, and advanced sections.

The fee for the 5K is $20. The proceeds fund a congratulatory pasta dinner for the state’s clubs on the eve of the race, a T-shirt, a goodie bag, and the event itself.

This year, Katherine Switzer, the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon, will speak at the pasta party. Schafer said the club’s first meeting on March 1 attracted 150 women. She said she expects at least 75 women at each subsequent meeting.

“This year, we want to see more stick-to-it-ness," Switzer said. "We would love to have college-age women come … and maybe next year they can be team leaders.”
