Football Schedule Set for 2010

The 2010 football schedule has been announced and the Bears will play six home games, beginning with the season opener Sept. 2.

Head Coach Clint Conque said he is glad the first game is at home.

“I’m excited to start the season off here at home,” he said. “It is an electric type of atmosphere and I think it is really going to energize our young team. We are also starting the season off with a Thursday game and we have always been successful with those games.”

The Bears will play Elizabeth City State at 7 p.m. that day in Estes Stadium.

Conque said he also is pleased with the non-conference schedule for the season.

“We have one Division II team at home, two Ohio Valley opponents and then the University of Tulsa at Tulsa where we brought a lot of fans with us to play them there last season,” he said. “One thing we tried to do was schedule an in-state game but scheduling prevented us from doing it this year.”

Athletic Director Brad Teague said UCA’s first choice when scheduling non-conference games is to play the Division II schools in Arkansas.

“Next year we will play [University of] Arkansas-Monticello, so we were able to secure them for 2011,” Teague said. “We always look to those folks first and sometimes schedules do not work out. The Division II schedule starts a week prior to the Division I schedule. The Gulf-South Conference starts their conference play in the third week of their season so the only opportunity for us to play any of them is during their second week of their schedule and it’s hard to make that work.”

Conque said the Southland Conference play is going to be challenging.

“It is going to be a challenge just as it is every year,” he said. “The Southland Conference has good coaches and some outstanding talent. We will be the youngest team in the conference this coming season."
