Declaration of Principles

February 5, 2010 by: Corey Womack

Every time we turn around it seems another newspaper has gone under.  Once-great leaders in the world of information are shutting their doors, never to print another word. The Internet has changed everything.  Twenty years ago, the power in journalism belonged to the printers.  They decided what we knew and when we knew it.  Today, Internet space is practically free.  The superhighway is saturated with information.  The power now lies with the readers.  If a publication can’t give them what they want, they have thousands of other alternatives. For the University of Central Arkansas to adequately prepare journalists for this next evolution in journalism, it has to teach students this new form.  May we present The Fountain.   As UCA’s first student-run, online publication, we have several goals for ourselves and some promises to our readers:

I.    We promise to present the facts in a simple, concise manner.

II.    There will be no editorializing.  We will present what happens, not what we think about it.

III.    We will strive to present every side to every story.

IV.    We will answer the call of the students.  If you want the information, we will find it.

V.    We will cooperate with other campus publications to present the truth –  fair and fast.

It is our pleasure to offer you our publication.  In a time when the heart of journalism is lost in a fog of opinion and advertisement, The Fountain aspires to be a source of truth…simple, pure, concise and refreshing.

Come join us.
