Dancers Bring Jazz to Pageant

Dancers United, UCA's urban dance student group, will be performing at the  2010 Miss Essence Scholarship Pageant at 7 p.m. tonight in Reynolds Performance Hall.

The pageant is a 35-year-old tradition on campus and is sponsored by Minority Student Services and Students for the Propagation of Black Culture. This year's event features six African-American students competing in tradition beauty and talent categories for scholarship money. Admission is free.

Aeiress Duhart, founder and president of Dancers United, said she is excited about the performance. The group has prepared two dances, each about two minutes long and both performed to a jazz theme.

"We've been practicing really hard and we're ready to show what we've got," Duhart said.

The group was established in the spring of 2009 as an RSO. It is a co-ed organization and has 15 regular memebers. It began publicly performing last semester.

"When I came to UCA, dance groups were very limited," Duhart said. "I thought that founding Dancers United would be a great way to get all dancers on campus together."

  1. What a great addition to the pageant with dancers performing to jazz. I applaud Duhart's initiative and effort... with a little bit of jazz!
