Cirque Mechanics: Boom Town

Reynolds Performance Hall  will be booming with excitement when one of the largest Cirque events, "Cirque Mechanics: Boom Town,"  comes to campus today at 7:30 p.m.

The UCA Public Appearances' Night Out Series brought Cirque Shanghai last year but this production is unlike any other because of the technicalities of its setup.

Jerry Biebesheimer, director of UCA Public Appearances, said it took 18 hours to set up the production in Reynolds.

"The Cirque Mechanics implies a lot of mechanical contractions involved. It is not just circus," Biebesheimer said. "A challenge to set up but interesting."

Although performers of the "Cirque Mechanics" troupe will be performing around the scenery, it does follow a story line.

As the name suggests, the show relates to the 1860's gold rush in a western mining town named Rosebud where two saloon owners set up shops with hopes of making some easy cash. What they encounter instead are fights, romances and other surprises.

Audience members will see the intricate and almost inseparable relationship between man and machine in tonight's performance as performers climb telephone poles, dance on a swinging chandelier and fly from a revolving crane. The set serves as both background and performance props for the acrobats.

The tour began in Utah in 2011 and will continue through 2012.

Tickets are free for UCA students and $10 for other students. They are $28-$33 for faculty and staff. Admission for the general public is $30-$40.

Here is a preview of what you will see tonight.
