Baseball hall of famer Rich “Goose” Gossage is on campus today. Gossage, known as one of the greatest closers in the history of baseball, will be in town for a series of events through Saturday. The Jacksonville Jaguars selected UCA Bears defensive end Larry Hart in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL draft yesterday. Hart was the 143rd pick overall and the only player selected from the Southland Conference. No other Bears player has ever been selected by the NFL so high in the draft. The three-game softball series scheduled for this weekend between the Bears and the Stephen F. Austin State University Lady Lumberjacks resumes today after being delayed by rain yesterday.  The teams were scheduled for a doubleheader yesterday but heavy rain and storms in the area forced the cancelation of the game. Mitch Rueter, a senior basketball player, has been named the male Student Athlete of the Year and Chloe Smith, a junior volleyball player, is the female Student Athlete of the Year. Bears Beat Devilettes in Softball

The UCA Bears softball team defeated the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes, 10-2, yesterday at Farris Field.  The Bears had 11 hits off the Mississippi Valley State pitching staff, including six for extra bases.  Freshman pitcher Kelsie Armstrong recorded the win for the Bears with a complete game performance that included 14 strikeouts. The Bears men’s golf team is in Jonesboro today and tomorrow for the Arkansas State Red Wolves Classic golf tournament. Head coach Ryke Dismuke said the team is getting better with each tournament. The Bears baseball team crushed the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, 15-5, last night at Bear Stadium.  The Bears scored 14 of their 15 runs during the first four innings of the game.
