Since this was my last ride-along with the campus police this semester, I tried to change things up. You know, get a different angle. After all, I don’t want to bore you. As luck would have it, I ended up riding with Officer Sarah Garrett, one of the three female officers at UCA.

When many of you heard on our Facebook page that I was riding with Officer Garrett, you proposed several questions. The most common question was, “What is it like being a female officer?” Garrett said it may be different for women police officers elsewhere, but not at UCA. Garrett said that she is treated the same as the men.

Garrett said that a lot of times women are trained just as much or more than the men so they can handle their own on the street. I saw the big gun in her police car. Man or woman, if you can aim and shoot that thing, you can handle your own.

Surprisingly, after all the fraternity drama this past week, Friday night was pretty uneventful – at least between 8 p.m. and midnight. We pulled over a girl on a moped. Garrett said she honestly thought the girl was drunk but, apparently, she just didn’t know how to drive the moped. Here is a video of that encounter.

The biggest stop of the night was the students that got caught with enough alcohol for a small party and a bag of weed.

Officer Chris Vasquez saw an SUV parked on a red curb so he went to tell the students inside the vehicle to move it. When he reached the car, he saw alcohol inside it. By the time we arrived, he was thoroughly searching the SUV and had already pulled out several bottles of liquor, cans of beer, a pipe and the weed.

After reading the students their rights, Vasquez told them that they could all go to jail for minor in possession of alcohol, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, or even possession of a controlled substance. Vasquez made the student with the weed dump it out and grind it into the concrete. Two other students had to pour out all the alcohol. We have attached that video at the end of the story. To hear the whole thing on audio, click here.

Since most of our readers seem to enjoy our look from inside the police car, we'll be back with more of them next semester.

The following information was taken from incident reports at UCAPD. Incident reports are filed daily by officers to document and describe each call they answer during their shifts. These reports are made available by university police after they are approved by a supervisor. That process takes a few days, which delays our report by a few days. This is a complete report of incidents filed for Nov. 20-22.

Nov. 20:

Student Kenall E. Seward, 18, of Jacksonville, called police at 10:03 a.m. to report that an 18-year-old female student was in his room fighting with him. Seward said the girl came to his room and started "messing with" his injured neck. Seward said he told the girl to leave his room. She pushed him and he hit her, he said. After that, she knocked over his television, Xbox and microwave. Officers didn't arrest either student.

Student Connor James Calaway, 19, of Benton, reported at 9:16 p.m. that his laptop and charger was stolen from his room in Conway Hall. Calaway's roommate, Kaylon Johnson, 18, of Conway, told police that his flat screen television was stolen too.

Nov. 21:

Student Rachel N. Mulkey, 19, of Greenbrier, reported at 9:01 a.m. that her white Toyota was broken into in the Physical Plant parking lot. Mulkey told police that the only thing taken was her iPod and auxiliary cord. Police estimated the value of the stolen property at $110 and repair of the broken window on her car at $150.

Faculty member Sally A. Entrekin, 38, reported at 9:17 a.m. that there had been a fire in Room 119 of the Lewis Science Center sometime during the weekend. Entrekin said she had placed leaves and paper sacks on a drier in the room on Friday and all the leaves were turned to ash. There was no damage to the room but police notified the Physical Plant so they could determine why the fire alarm didn't go off.

Police saw student Cole R. Caruthers, 19, of Richmond, Texas, hit a Nissan Maxima while trying to park at 10:45 a.m. There were scratches on Caruthers' Ford pickup. Damage to the Maxima, which belongs to student Arturo Hernandez, 22, of Branch, Miss., consisted of scratches and a small dent.

Student David John Appe, 19, of Covington, La., was given a citation for criminal mischief after an off-duty police officer saw him driving through the grass near Bear Village about 4:30 p.m. Police estimated damage to the lawn at $500 because the ground was soft from the rain.

Student Robert Jonathan Ontiveros, 20, of Lonoke, hit a Ford Mustang while trying to back into a parking spot at Stadium Park Apartments about 7:41 p.m. Damage to the Mustang, owned by student Brittany D. Bailey, 18, of Hot Springs, was estimated at $250. Damage to Ontiveros' Chevrolet Silverado was estimated at $500.

Students Connor E. Gates, 18, of Rogers, Brody Lane Prince, 18, of Mountain View, and Deaunte Raheem Patterson, 18, of Benton, were arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession of an instrument of crime, violation of the state Clean Air Act and issued Judicial Board citations for drug violations after police found them smoking synthetic marijuana in a car while parked in the lot at Reynold's Performance Hall. Police sent the substance to a laboratory for analysis.

Nov. 22:

Nonstudent Jon Edward Williams, 41, of Conway, was arrested at 4:11 a.m. for DWI after police stopped him for swerving on Bruce Street. Williams failed the field sobriety test and registered .19 on the breathalyzer test.

Nonstudent Joseph Frank Szafranksi, 22, of Conway, was arrested for stealing an external hard drive from Stanley Russ Hall.

Aramark employees Janet McBride and David Krissel called police at 10:04 a.m. to report that someone had broken into the concession stand at Estes Stadium. The door to the concession stand was propped open and there was a large hole in the wall. Police found a pair of broken scissors which was apparently used to try and cut into the dial on the safe. McBride said the safe hasn't been used in years. The cash register was also damaged, apparently from the same pair of scissors. Damage to the building was estimated at $2,000. Damage to the cash register and safe was estimated at $250 and $400, respectively.

Nonstudent Brandon Young Waters, 20, of Conway, was arrested for driving while intoxicated on drugs at 10:25 p.m. after police stopped him at the intersection of Bruce Street and Elizabeth Street for faulty brake lights. Police smelled marijuana when they approached the car and they found a small amount of it in the center console. Waters failed the field sobriety tests.

Student Kyle D. Bickell, 21, of Conway, was arrested for DWI, reckless driving, and fleeing about 10:27 p.m. after officers saw him drive off the road and into the grass near Estes Stadium and then into the parking lot. Bickell abandoned the truck and ran off, but one of his fraternity brothers turned him in. He failed the field sobriety test and registered .10 on the breathalyzer test.

A member of the Occupy Wall Street movement was cited for violating the city's noise ordinance while standing on the sidewalk in front of the president's house about 5 p.m. today.

Police said that Jeremy "J.T." Scott, 35, was yelling at students walking along the sidewalk and crossing the street as he stood in front of the president's house holding a piece of paper with the word "occupy" handwritten on it. The officer required Scott to move within 50 feet of the crosswalk so he could talk to students without violating the noise ordinance.

"As long as he's quiet, he's fine," said Conway police officer Dillon Mistrille, who issued the ticket.

Scott said he wasn't yelling at students and plans to contest the ticket in court. His court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 3.

"I said hello to a person crossing the street," Scott said as he waited for Mistrille to finish writing the ticket. "They were being bullies and twisting my words" he said of the six officers, including campus police, standing around him.

Scott said he was one of five members of the Occupy movement in Little Rock who came to Conway to demonstrate today. They chained themselves to a sign in front the Bank of America building on Harkrider Road earlier today but otherwise were acting independently around town, he said.

Before moving his demonstration to the president's house about 2:30 p.m., Scott said he was at Ferguson Chapel discussing the Occupy movement and its goals. He said he yelled while he was there and talked about the government "bombing babies" before campus police asked him to leave after about 30 minutes.

Scott said he is an Army veteran and disabled with a back injury. He said he grew up in Conway and has family connections to UCA.
