Black History Month Events Begin

We all know about racism between ethnic groups but what about racism within an ethic group? It exists. It’s called shadism.

This lesser-known form of racism is the topic of a program being presented tonight as part of the campus's observance of Black History Month. There are 11 events scheduled this month, including a visit by filmmaker Spike Lee.

Tonight's program, "The Color of My Skin: Shadism," will include clips from a documentary about the topic and an open discussion about it. The program begins at 7 p.m. in Room 214 of the Student Center. It is free and open to everyone.

“Most don’t know people are prejudice in this way and it’s not just around here, it’s all over the world,” said Renee Smith, historian of National Association of Black Men United.

The program is sponsored by the Joint Black History Month Committee. The organizations involved are the Students for the Propagation of Black Culture, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Keep A Child Alive Foundation, the Phi Alpha Theta Honor Society, the National Association of Black Men United, the Honors Council and the International Honor Society.
