Aid for Japan Continues

Efforts by our campus community to help the victims of the earthquake in Japan continued over the weekend with the Stadium Park Apartments housing committee raising $120 at a yard sale.

The committee members set up the sale in the parking lot using items donated by students, faculty and staff. The articles included clothes, shoes, purses, kitchen utensils, decorative items and lawn tools.

“We’re like Wal-Mart,” said James Santiago, a Stadium Park resident assistant.

Organizers were concerned about the blustery weather Saturday but it didn't stop people from shopping. Cassidy Carpenter, resident coordinator at Stadium Park, said the response was overwhelming.

“We’ve sold a lot today,” Carpenter said. “We’ve made over $120, excluding the rest of the items that are yet to be sold.”

All the money will be given to the UCA Save Japan Foundation. Sohji Izumi, president of the foundation, said he will donate the money to the American Red Cross for the earthquake and tsunami relief effort.

  1. Update: Thank you for writing this article and demonstrating that the UCA community truly is concerned about the welfare and recovery of Japan.

In the end, over $205 was actually raised by selling tons of items to to the community at low prices. It was a joy to both clothe/equip Conway residents while simultaneously raising money for Japan.

All remaining items were donated to Goodwill so no donations were wasted and landfill space was saved. :)
